Top 10 Alanis Morissette Songs – The Obvious

(Click to go to the MySpace playlist)

I have 6405 songs currently on my iPod. 133 of those are songs by Alanis Morissette. That means 2% of all my music comes from Alanis Morissette’s albums. (Of my physical CD collection, it’s more like 5%.)

I labeled this list “The Obvious” because these are mostly songs everyone will have at least heard once.

1. Precious Illusions
(Under Rug Swept, 2002)

But this won’t work as well as the way it once did
‘Cause I want to decide between survival and bliss
And though I know who I’m not I still don’t know who I am
But I know I won’t keep on playing the victim

We all have our grand illusions we hold onto, the things we think will help us or make everything better, but we eventually have to let it go.

2. So Pure

(Supposed Former Infatuation Junkie, 1998)

Luminous more so than most anyone.
Unapologetically alive.
Knot in my stomach,
And lump in my throat.

This one is kind of the ode to that person you could basically only describe as awesome.

3. You Learn

(Jagged Little Pill, 1995)

You live you learn
You love you learn
You cry you learn
You lose you learn
You bleed you learn
You scream you learn

We don’t learn anything if everything always goes well.

4. Eight Easy Steps

(So Called Chaos, 2004)

I’ll teach you all this in eight easy steps
A course of a lifetime you’ll never forget
I’ll show you how to in eight easy steps
I’ll show you how leadership looks when taught by the best

We project the image we want others to see, especially if it isn’t who we are.

5. Out Is Through

(So Called Chaos, 2004)

The only way out is through
The faster we’re in the better
The only way out is through ultimately
The only way out is through
The only way we’ll feel better
The only way out is through ultimately

You can’t take back what you’ve done, and you can’t just walk away when you start something.

6. Hand In My Pocket

(Jagged Little Pill, 1995)

I’m broke but I’m happy
I’m poor but I’m kind
I’m short but I’m healthy, yeah

I’m high but I’m grounded
I’m sane but I’m overwhelmed
I’m lost but I’m hopeful baby

For everything we have going wrong, there’s always some positive outcome along with the bad.

7. Thank U

(Supposed Former Infatuation Junkie, 1998)
Thank you terror
Thank you disillusionment
Thank you frailty
Thank you consequence
Thank you thank you silence

Without the bad, we wouldn’t know the good or even our own strength.

8. Joining You

(Supposed Former Infatuation Junkie, 1998)

If we were our culture,
If we were our leaders,
If we were our denials,
I’d be joining you.

We all experience similar influences and situations, but everyone can take something different from every situation.

9. Underneath

(Flavors of Entanglement, 2008)

There is no difference in what we’re doing in here
That doesn’t show up as bigger symptoms out there
So why spend all our time in dressing our bandages
When we’ve the ultimate key to the cause right here
Our underneath

The things we do to each other within our own families and homes often mirror the things we protest in the world, yet we want others to take the responsibility.

10. Head Over Feet

(Jagged Little Pill, 1995)

You’ve already won me over in spite of me
Don’t be alarmed if I fall head over feet
And don’t be surprised if I love you for all that you are
I couldn’t help it
It’s all your fault

No matter what type of front someone puts up, it can all come crumbling down for one person.

What is your favorite song on this list? Any suggestions for future song list themes?
