Inktober 2016 Week 1

In honor of Inktober, I’ve decided to gather each week’s drawings into a round-up post every Friday. Here is what I’ve done week one:

Day 1: The cover. I couldn’t come up with a way to incorporate the “fast” prompt into my cover, so I just decided to skip it. Kind of hard to see the title, though.

Day 2: “Noisy”. I decided I wanted to draw the noise tumbling out of a trumpet. Why a trumpet? Because that is what the 4-year-old had taken to school that week as a share that makes noise.

Day 3: “Collect”. Pokémon! I scrolled through some pictures on Google until one caught my eye. So this trainer just collects Rowletts.

Day 4: “Hungry”. I caught a biscuit with a spiderweb. I really need to make myself some biscuits.

Day 5: “Sad”. As I was feeling halfway through the background.

Day 6: “Hidden”. Cutie forest animals playing hide and seek.

Day 7: “Lost”. More zigzag grass, this time with small things hiding in it.

That’s the end of this week. I feel like I’m starting to get a grip of using this brush pen. Hopefully it will get even easier as the month goes on. If you want to see these as I make them, you can follow me on Instagram or Twitter where I post them every afternoon/evening as I finish drawing.

Pups Save A Cake, The Remix

Last year I made a Paw Patrol cake for a certain little nugget’s third birthday, using frozen buttercream transfers to make the pups. This year, we did it again, but I decided to do it a little differently.

This time I made royal icing transfers. I also added a non-ghosty Marshall (“I want the ghost, too!”) and Ryder. At first I tried to make letters, but i kept smashing them with my hand as I was writing so i gave up and decided just to write it on the cake the right way around.

We used this strawberry cake recipe. Since the birthday boy loves to bake, he got to help make it. And, since his school was out that week, he also got to help shop for the ingredients. Which wasn’t all that exciting except we went to the grocery store with a Starbucks inside and got our drinks first.

He was very happy with the final outcome, and so were his friends at his impromptu birthday at the park playdate they were having anyway. Then again, you can’t go wrong with sugar on a birthday.

Shrug It Off

It seems like it’s been a while since I’ve knit something beginning to end. I have a lot of projects lying around in various stages of finishing. There’s a mostly done baby blanket, three mittens waiting to be embroidered at Christmas time (there were four, but one got lost and needs to be remade), and the rest of the mittens that only have ribbing started. But I haven’t sat down and finished anything in a while. Mostly because it either doesn’t need to be done for a long time, or has no deadline at all.

This shrug/cape/shawl thing does have a deadline, however. My mom needed it done for her gala at work on April 30. She decided she needed a new one around March 20, so, with shipping time for the yarn from Knit Picks, I had a bit of a time crunch on my hands. Luckily, she picked the Gloss Lace yarn which is a blend of wool and silk and therefore could be spit spliced together. Which means I only had to weave two ends, the beginning and the end.

I made up for having only two ends to weave by dropping a stitch about twenty rows from the end and only realizing it when I was on the last row. So I dropped a couple around it to give myself yarn to fix it and did a lot of this:

It worked out fine, so I was able to finish in just over a week. Now it just needs a bath and a dry before I give it to her this weekend and take a final finished picture. Which you will be able to see Sunday on my Instagram or a few days after on my Tumblr.
